From the mother of a girl age one at adoption:I brought my daughter home on her first birthday. I would say that it took a couple of days to get her to eat things we were used to eating. She had never eaten anything that wasn't warm so she didn't like ice cream,
cold milk or juice. She quickly overcame that. She still eats rice with the most enthusiasm of any food she is given. For about a month she seemed not to understand what we were saying to her but gradually got much better and became a chatterbox.
When she came she could not yet walk. She started within 2 months, within the average range.
My daughter was found abandonded on a railway platform on Christmas Day. It was assumed that she was about 5 days old. The umbilical cord was still attached.
My daughter was kept at the nursery in India until the day I brought her home. Since I lived in India at the time and had adopted my elder daughter from there I knew that they were taking very good care of the children. She was quite attached to the people there but I am sure that she did not really grieve since she was quickly immersed into all the craziness in our home. (I have three other children). We took her back several times to the orphanage and she didn't want anything to do with the people as long as she recognized the place.
In spite of it being a good orphanage, children do not wish to return. The older child I mentionned also went back to visit. For a long time she would refer to the place as the dorm where she was staying before she came
home to her parents. She was also a found child who lived in the orphanage for about a year.
